It is a shame that so few people chose to respond to a survey asking where Bradford Council should make cuts.

The authority is facing brutal funding choices, and all of us are likely to be affected in one way or another.

So any opportunity to have a say where cuts should be made must be grabbed with both hands. But, just 433 people took advantage of the opportunity.

One of the most popular suggestions was to cut back refuse collection from weekly to fortnightly – a move likely to attract as much hostility as support.

Another was to axe the Council’s Community Pride newspaper – and given that the survey was published in that very paper, the low response might in itself be an argument for that action.

Lower pay for fewer managers, cuts to the number of councillors and a reduction in their expenses were also highlighted, along with cuts to translation and interpretation services.

The Council faces a £67.5m funding cut over the next two years and that means all of these hard choices, and many others, have to go on the table.

The important thing now is for as many people as possible to have their say.

Join in the T&A phone poll, write to your councillor, make representations to City Hall, and stand up for services you use. Just don’t do nothing and then complain when something you value is lost.
