A royal visit is always something to celebrate, for it puts the city and district in the spotlight in a positive way.

It gives us the chance to showcase ourselves on a national and even international stage and challenge a few tired old images others elsewhere may have of us.

Yesterday’s visit by Prince Charles was particularly welcome because it was no whistle-stop tour.

The Prince spent a considerable amount of time here, visiting a number of different places across the district.

It was clear he enjoyed the opportunity to get to know a little more about Bradfordians who, in turn, relished the chance to become better acquainted with the heir to the throne.

But amid all the cheers, flags and bunting, there was also a spot of work to be done.

The Prince is patron of the Campaign for Wool – and he was here to highlight Bradford’s contribution to that section of the textile industry.

Of course, the trade has a proud past in this area and played a massive role in shaping the city itself.

But it is still an important industry in the district today, with a global reputation for excellence – in short, something to be proud of.

The Prince will have helped spread that message both at home and abroad.
