SIR - If Margaret Thatcher, pictured right, had not abolished earnings-related pensions there would have been no need for Brian Holmans (T&A, July 10) to feel so grateful for getting free bus travel, a winter fuel allowance and free prescriptions as he would have had sufficient income to pay his way.

That's what Audrey Raistrick is fighting to get restored.

Considering the sacrifices today's pensioners made in the last century, I don't think many people would mind paying a little extra tax if it meant our senior citizens living a more dignified and less humbling life.
