SIR – Since Westfield bought the Broadway site they have built the largest inner-city shopping centre in Europe at Shepherd’s Bush and are well on their way to building another one in Stratford – at a cost of £1.5bn, which actually has fewer units pre-let than Broadway.
Meanwhile, we Bradfordians are told that Westfield can’t afford to build our shopping centre, scheduled to cost less than £400m – less than a third of the cost of either London site.
To add insult to injury, Westfield has announced that it plans to donate £50,000 to a charitable campaign led by the Evening Standard. A malalignment of priorities, surely?
So...dare anyone at the Council press Westfield about its ability to fund other projects, some of which have no quantifiable return at all, and some that seem less viable than Broadway, when our former shopping centre becomes a park? Let’s wait and see!
