SIR – So, we now have to have Bingley Show moved to Saturday! Firstly, can we have the person or persons who have invoked this law named, please?
If they have the courage of their convictions in causing problems which affect a large number of people, everyone should know who they are.
Do these people think that by moving the show to Saturday that it will make the showgoers go to church on a Sunday instead? I doubt it – it will only serve to alienate people further from religion.
If this law cannot be changed, are we now to expect supermarkets to be allowed to open only a part of their stores on Sunday?
Better still, can we apply this law to the Sunday car boot sale in the cattle market? This causes traffic problems in Bingley, it doesn’t do anything at all for trade in the town centre, and it means that people who wish to attend All Saints’ Church have difficulty parking near to the building every Sunday morning, not just once a year!
There will inevitably be a financial cost in making this change, at a time when we are all trying to help the recovery from the economic downturn.
