SIR – August 6 was commemorated, according to various media sources, and rightly so, as this was when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
It was a great day for number of reasons. It saw the ending of the Second World War within days. It saved tens of thousands, if not more, of Allied troops’ lives, and even more of the Japanese.
It was the culmination of a great scientific achievement, the releasing of the power of the atom, so yes there is a great deal to commemorate. A G Goldsbrough, Leeds Road, Ilkley
