SIR – I have heard a rumour that in order to interest Sainsbury’s in the Bradford & Bingley building, they were offered the portion of Myrtle Park where the bandstand now is for use as a car park.
If this is correct, then a number of all-day parking places near to and along Thrift Way would be lost to the public.
Consequently, I would expect Bradford’s councillors and negotiatiors to be as tough as Leeds were when Sainsbury’s applied to build a store close to the centre of Otley.
There, because public parking space was lost, Sainsbury’s was compelled to provide four hours’ free parking for customers. This allows ample time to visit the shops and cafes and the numerous attractions that help make Otley the sort of place Richard Banks would like Bingley to be – a destination town (T&A, August 2).
Time will tell, as the saying goes, and we’ll find out what’s in store for Bingley when the customary plans and drawings are unveiled. In the meantime, I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping ‘team Bingley’ don’t let us down.
