SIR – I believe that the Government stance on compelling people to work past the age of 65 is ill-advised.

It is a fact that many people aged 70 with sedentary jobs are as fit as fiddles, but someone with a lifetime of heavy engineering work may be clapped out at 60.

With continuing immigration, the last thing this country will be short of is manpower.

Recently it was reported that a “young chappie” from Kidderminster was working for the supermarket at 94 years of age. Bravo, and, give that man a cigar.

Many more are still working at 70 – take Tom Jones, he’s still belting out songs at that age. It’s not unusual (pun intended)!
