SIR – “Life sentence for City player” said the headline in the T&A (July 27). Unfortunately, it is anything but. This young man is 26 years old, and has been told that he will have to serve at least 25 years in prison.

So, it is quite possible that he could be released when he is 51 years old, and could therefore enjoy a further 30 to 40 years of freedom. This cannot be right. It really is time that ‘life’ sentences meant exactly that.

Further, in my view, all prisoners should have to serve their full sentences, with good behaviour expected as a matter of course. Sentences should then be extended for any misdemeanours while inside.

The pendulum has unfortunately swung too far in favour of offenders. This has to change.
