SIR – The proposal for a cross-city rail link is probably the most important suggested development for Bradford in living memory. The big question, of course, is will it be taken on board?

It really should be supported by all the political parties, both local and national, as well as by the city’s business community. There should surely be no dissenting voices across all our councillors and Members of Parliament.

If our city is to make any proper progress, then this is the one thing that should be a catalyst for everything else.

We should also be able to expect all the above individuals and groups to add their full support. If this is not forthcoming, then one surely has to question the motives involved.

Everyone fully appreciates that this proposal is for the medium term, bearing in mind the economic climate, but that does not stop initial preparations being made, including the protection of the proposed route, so that when matters improve, as they obviously will, then Bradford, just for a change, will be in a position to proceed immediately.

Let’s all be totally positive about this proposal. It deserves nothing less.
