SIR – The Lord Mayor of Bradford is not paid a salary but gets a special allowance of £12,600 for expenses.

However, the Prime Minister wants to introduce elected mayors in 20 English cities, including Bradford, all of whom would no doubt receive a sizeable emolument from the public purse.

Would our city fathers be willing to reduce the numbers of councillors to offset any additional expense, instead of increasing council tax bills?

After all, most of the electorate consider their complement of 90 to be excessive.

This is not a rhetorical question.
