SIR – What a great shame the BBC is axing Last Of The Summer Wine after almost 40 years.

In my view it is a classic and a great British institution, putting Yorkshire on the map and giving Northern comedy a whole new meaning. Sunday evenings won’t be the same.

The loss of Last Of The Summer Wine, I am sure, would even have dear old Nora Batty scratching her head in disbelief.

The BBC should have a rethink. Good programmes these days are sadly on the decline, without a classic like Summer Wine vanishing from our screens.
