SIR – Having just read David Barnett’s column, I felt I had to write and congratulate him.
It is the best piece I have read or heard during this election campaign. I agree with everything he said about the so-called Gordon Brown gaffe.
The reporting of a private conversation overheard by accident is appalling, yet it is only what we could expect from our national popular papers.
It is wonderful to hear Mr Barnett’s affirmation that he has never obtained a story by underhand means.
I have been a T&A reader for 50 years or so, at one time crossing swords with editor OB Stokes, but Mr Barnett makes me proud to be a loyal reader.
