SIR – I do not remember Laurie Coughlin as Lord Mayor of Bradford, but do remember his brother, Daniel, holding the office.
I was working in a residential home on Park Drive in Heaton at the time, and seem to remember that if a resident reached the age of 90, they received a visit from the Lord Mayor.
One of our residents, a Mrs Hey, had reached such an age and I overheard the visiting Lord Mayor ask which part of Bradford she was from, to which she rather proudly replied: “Oh I am not from Bradford, I am from Pudsey”.
Lord Mayor Daniel Coughlin, all the way from Glasgow, replied with a chuckle, “Oh I think we can forgive you for that, Mrs Hey”.
A truly warm-hearted Glaswegian.
