SIR – The Court File (T&A, November 12) listed defendants fined for not having a TV licence, some getting away with only having to pay £30 court costs, no doubt being paid by the taxpayer.

This farcical situation only serves but to boost the argument for scrapping the TV licence, and having the BBC pay its own way. They can well afford to, having admitted paying its 100 most senior staff a total of £20 million a year.

Auntie is, at least, giving us an early Christmas present by pensioning off Terry Wogan, the downside being that he will be replaced by someone just as grossly overpaid.
