SIR – While out shopping last weekend, I had my purse stolen from my handbag.

I have had all my cards etc replaced free of charge, except my driving licence.

When I rang the DVLA I was told I would have to pay £20 as “somebody has to pay”.

Why don’t the people who drive around without tax and insurance pay when they are caught and give the fines to the DVLA to compensate people who have been robbed through no fault of their own?

Lost and stolen are lumped together, but they are completely different. Its another case of the innocent paying for the criminals. If you claim on your insurance then your premium goes up and you pay again.
