SIR – I am writing in response to your article (November 9) regarding the closure of Abbey Court sheltered housing.

My father, who has lung cancer, has lived in Abbey Court for nearly five years and is very happy with his accommodation. The scheme managers are terrific; they are always on hand if any of the residents and families have a problem.

Personally, I think that these premises should not be closed and Anchor should think very seriously before doing so.

Most of the residents are quite elderly and some of them have serious health problems. You hear so many times on the news of care homes closing down and elderly people being moved and then all the upheaval makes their ailments worse.

I know Abbey Court is not a care home, but it is like a large family and all the tenants know one another.

I know we have been in a recession for the past two years, but surely Anchor receive enough monies from the rents to be able to bring the properties up-to-date. Or perhaps they could ask the Lottery for a grant, then all these elderly people would not have to worry where they are going to spend their senior years.
