SIR – In “Decongestion Plans” (Letters, October 29), JK Robinson calls for the demolition of the Carnegie Library building to improve traffic flows at the Carr Lane/ Leeds Road junction.

Windhill and Wrose ward Councillors have considered this problem for some time, and highways officers for considerably longer.

When last consulted, the latter were investigating light sequence changes to improve flow. Councillor John Hall and I have consulted with Council engineers and seen a variety of detailed plans including connection with a Shipley East bypass which is getting remoter due to the financial crisis. This important, busy junction is never far from the Council’s thoughts when considering road improvements.

It cannot be considered in isolation, but must relate to Fox Corner, where changes to traffic flow are also actively being considered.

As for demolishing the Carnegie Library, this is a fine old building. True, the site is a bit tatty, and all ward Councillors have raised this with Council officers and (through them) the owners.

The building appears to be relatively sound and is of great historic interest. I don’t believe its demolition would necessarily improve traffic flow because of limitations a little down the road at Fox Corner.
