SIR – I have literally seen hundreds of motorists using their mobile phones while at the wheel, like those in the pictures taken by your photographer (T&A, October 17).
They can’t possibly be in full control of their vehicle using one hand and constitute a danger to every other motorist.
It was therefore gratifying to learn that a new policing unit run by an inspector, sergeant and more than 30 officers has been launched to crackdown on irresponsible drivers.
But I was not pleased that comic Jimmy Carr had been cleared of driving while using a mobile. His lawyer argued that as his client was using the mobile as a Dictaphone he was not breaching the law.
Interactive or not, he would still have had only one hand on the wheel. New legislation should be introduced PDQ to close this loophole.
