SIR – Hannah Baker emphasised the recommendation that children should wear reflective clothing when outside in dark weather (T&A, October 20).

As former road safety secretary and chairman, may I also suggest that cyclists make themselves and their bicycles as conspicuous as possible by night or day?

In fact, we could all, old, medium, or young benefit from wearing something reflective on dark nights or dull days.

During World War Two, we had double British Summer Time during the summer and normal British Summer Time during the winter.

It was wonderful in June to be able to garden until midnight. And winter evenings were less depressing because dusk was delayed.

I hope that it’s not too late for our MPs to ensure that it gets late later this year or next.
