SIR – We now learn that the Government is giving £45m towards the cost of the British Film Centre which is to be constructed on the London South Bank at a total cost of £140m.

If only Bradford’s councillors had persuaded the Government to spend this money on renovating the Odeon here in Bradford, turning that into the British Film Centre.

It would not have cost anywhere near the £140m required for the London building and would, appropriately, be a neighbour to the National Media Museum.

Perhaps there is still time for councillors to approach Prime Minister Gordon Brown and put this commonsense and important money-saving idea to him.
