SIR – Re the problem of uninsured cars. Why has no-one come up with these obvious solutions: If a car is uninsured it should immediately be impounded. If, within 14 days, a valid insurance certificate is not produced, then the car should either be sold or crushed.

Many drivers presumably don’t insure their cars because of the derisory penalties if convicted. Fine the uninsured drivers a minimum of £1,000, and if the fines are not paid, again sell or crush the vehicles concerned.

These measures I am sure would soon resolve this problem.
