SIR – That developer McAleer & Rushe (T&A, September 9) has had to approach Bradford Council for a massive loan of £45 million so that they can complete their development at the corner of Godwin Street and Thornton Road has to be a great cause for concern.

They may well have a hotel group to take part of the new complex, with the offices to be rented by another company. However, companies’ situations change.

Should that happen here, and Bradford Council had provided a substantial loan, where would that leave the Council and its ratepayers thereafter?

The risks here appear to be particularly significant. One therefore has to ask whether this is something that the Council should be considering at all? Jobs may be promised, but that should not be the be all and end all.
