SIR – Your recent correspondence apropos wayside pulpits reminded me irresistibly of one of the funniest pieces of graffiti I ever saw.
Way back in the early 1950s a wayside pulpit outside a church on the Finchley Road at Swiss Cottage, North London bore the imposing legend, “If you are tired of sin, come inside!”.
In equally bold lettering, some wit had added the postscript, “And if you aren’t, ring Mayfair 536178!”
