SIR – I recently flew to England to care for my seriously-ill mother, a resident of Halifax, who was admitted to hospital and who has since sadly died, leaving her 18-month-old cat, Tishy Humbug.

I was horrified when she came home with such a young cat for obvious reasons, as she was 83 at the time.

Regrettably, I was unable to take on Tishy myself, and with only a few days left before heading back to the USA, was at my wits’ end with worry.

On the advice of Westmount Vets I contacted Haworth Cat Rescue via Facebook, who were extremely helpful. They were sympathetic to my plight and agreed to take Tishy in spite of long waiting lists.

I urge older people to adopt age-appropriate companion animals and everyone to make provision for the future of their pets, so that similar situations don’t occur so often.

Tishy has been through a lot but I now have peace of mind in knowing she will be well looked after until a new home is found.

I asked for donations instead of flowers at my mother’s funeral to help Haworth Cat Rescue carry on with the wonderful work they do.
