SIR – In response to Philip Bird (T&A, February 5), the trouble with bypasses, new roads and the like is that, putting more of our remaining few green acres under tarmac just tends to cause more traffic.

On the subject of climate change, perhaps he has his own theory as to why the climate, especially in Britain, has been so messed up lately? We no longer have proper seasons, we have far more serious flooding than ever, both in summer and winter nowadays.

We have years where we have severe gales at all times, with winds up to hurricane force. These cause enormous devastation, but seem to be a recent phenomenon.

Nearly all scientists now agree with the view that man-made emissions have seriously messed with the climate.

Most importantly, on the nuclear power front, I would dearly love to know how he proposes to deal with the nuclear waste which will last effectively forever. We can’t bury it and even if we could, would he want to live anywhere near where it was buried?

How are we supposed to keep records of where it is buried, especially with all the secrecy involved and the constantly changing governments in the UK?

Also, how does he propose to defuse the terrorist threat to nuclear power stations and their potential to cause us another Chernobyl disaster?
