SIR – I have, along with many other residents of Wyke, campaigned for and wholly-supported a new academy in Wyke.

Having overcome the disappointment of it not being rebuilt on the existing site due to health and safety issues and Bradford College’s (stakeholder) original site in Bowling, which would require hundreds of pupils travelling daily out of the catchment area, we have accepted the High Fernley Primary School site, to possibly include a new Wyke library.

Our concern is in the naming of the academy. We are not against incorporating Sir Edward Appleton’s name, but we can’t lose our community identity in any such name.

We prefer Appleton Wyke Academy. Bradford College decided without any local consultation. The council and education portfolios holder for education were aware of our request.

Bradford College should have consulted with the community prior to any decision.

A petition in support of incorporating Wyke in the name is to be presented to a full council meeting.
