SIR – Once again a bit of snow caused chaos. Why?
When I was snowed-in in 1947, and at other times, all manner of equipment was used to get us to school and we walked. No heat at school, we did our lessons in our coats and gloves if we had any.
Where are the snow ploughs? If they can’t be used because some silly person didn’t realise humps would stop them, then do the roads that do not have any.
People out of work, as well as many others, followed a truck of some kind with salt in it carrying a spade and a small stick and kept the pavements clear.
Now people say they can’t go to work because of the snow. They would soon moan if a fire crew said, “We’re sorry, we can’t come to your house that’s on fire because of snow.” Of course, they would turn out and get there; it’s all choice and a bit of common sense.
