SIR – I applaud Councillor Qasim Khan for his frankness in deriding the Council’s failure to adequately deal with the consequences of the recent bad weather (T&A, February 10).
However, I must remind him that, as an elected member, he is one of the Council’s decision and policy-making team – the gaffers – and, as such, should be instructing the electorate’s servants, Tony Reeve and his massive band of officers, on what the Council expects of them and its workforce.
Just like manual workers, managers and senior staff need to be supervised and admonished as necessary. As employer representatives, how often, I wonder, do elected members of the Council make unannounced visits into the workplace (council offices) to assess the performance of this section of the electorate’s employees?
