SIR – As a World, Commonwealth, and Olympic gold medallist I know all about setting goals and taking on challenges, even when they might seem impossible to achieve.

That’s why I would encourage anyone looking for a challenge to sign up for one of Marie Curie Cancer Care’s wonderful Rise to the Challenge events.

The Rise to the Challenge events programme has something for everyone; from treks in the Peruvian Andes to walking in the Lake District, as well as abseiling at some of the UK’s most stunning sites. And of course, my favourite, cycle challenges such as Cork to Dublin or the Canadian Rockies, so if the cycling doesn’t leave you breathless the scenery certainly will!

And what makes taking on these challenges all the more worthwhile is that the money you raise from them will make it possible for people who are terminally ill to be cared for and spend their last days in the comfort of their own homes, surrounded by family and friends.

I have had personal experiences of cancer within my own family and I understand the huge difference this choice can make.
