SIR – Although Oxfam welcomes the steps that the CBI is making in regards to climate change, it should be noted that Government attempts to transform “ambition in to action” (T&A, December 4) have been obstructed by effective CBI lobbying of the 2008 Climate Change Bill, which has led to many progressive amendments to the bill being erased.

Aviation and shipping emissions from UK reduction targets have been removed, even though these sectors contribute significantly to UK emissions. The CBI has also blocked limits that were to be placed on the use of emissions credits, effectively forestalling the real changes to British industry needed help the UK tackle climate change.

The CBI wants to allow the most polluting sectors to be exempt from paying in full for these emissions credits, and it continues to support the expansion of coal power stations and extended capacity at Heathrow.

Oxfam applauds the leadership role being taken by the CBI, but we urge a more innovative and ambitious approach which would truly allow the UK to pursue a low-carbon future.
