SIR – On July 10, one of several cars driving very slowly from Burley around 7pm, we realised the cause of the hold-up when we saw about 40 to 50 cyclists stretched across our side of the road.

The Highway Code tells us to “never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends”. They continued in this fashion, doing 30mph maximum, all the way down the bypass, which has a speed limit around 50-60mph, to Addingham, leaving some cars too worried to overtake. This wasn’t an official race, but seemed to be a club for enthusiasts.

I would like to ask them to be aware of their own safety on the road. I would like them to read the Highway Code, and ask their kids what they learned in Cycling Proficiency. I would like them to show consideration for the law and consideration and respect for the taxpaying cars the road was intended for.

I would remind them not to look back at us cars with an incredulous look, when we are trailing right behind them trying to find a way past. And I would really like them to display their “muscle” in a less inane way.
