SIR – If letter writer Philip Bird spent more time talking to residents, he would quickly discover that the dangers of speeding traffic are a major concern for people living in Saltaire (T&A, July 10).

The latest Council survey shows that one in six cars driving along Dallam Avenue break the 30mph speed limit, and the number of cars rat-running in the area has soared since the Bingley bypass opened in 2003.

The constant impact of this antisocial behaviour on the quality of life of local residents is horrendous and we should not take it for granted.

A 20mph residential zone will not magically solve all of Saltaire’s traffic problems. Drivers do, indeed, routinely ignore speed limits and thereby endanger the lives of others. But 20mph zones reduce traffic speeds, and this initiative will be a vital step in our long transition towards a post-oil, low-carbon society.
