SIR – Daniel Wood, of a rump “Liberal” party knocks the party list system under which MEPs are elected without suggesting an alternative (Letters, May 16).

He surely can’t favour first-past-the-post under which only a few people who know about the candidates may vote positively for them?

Most voters merely vote for a party in our so-called democracy anyway. Where six of seven plausible candidates are standing, the winning minority may only have 20 per cent of the vote and may not even be the second, third or fourth choice of most voters.

Such flawed thinking leaves me questioning Mr Wood’s other assertions.

Who is the “we” who “can’t resume control of our own country”? The person introducing 42 days’ imprisonment without charge? The group who imposed the poll tax on the country?

It won’t be anyone who can claim to have the backing of most voters. No wonder our leaders get so much stick from the media! Most people didn’t vote for them and think they deserve all they get.

This isn’t good for democracy and can only turn people off from the political process.
