SIR - For once ITV have done themselves proud. I refer to the magnificent new series, Locks and Quays, on Thursdays.
This interesting ten-part series follows, week by week, the journey of a narrow boat as it wends its way from Leeds on the Aire and Calder Navigation through the 127-mile journey to end at the Stanley Locks in Liverpool.
The Leeds-Liverpool Canal is the longest canal system in England and is world famous for its Five Rise Locks system which were completed in 1770 and designed by John Longbottom.
Incidentally, the lower Three Rise Locks are at present undergoing repair.
This series will have much of interest for all tastes. Locally we have places like Saltaire Village, an aqueduct made from cast iron that takes the canal over the River Aire at Dowley Gap near Bingley, and much more.
A canal system is a totally different environment to the rest of the landscape and holds something of interest for everyone.
