SIR - Further to the debate on smoking, which appears to have opened a large can of worms', can I have the definitive word?

The whole situation is reminiscent of the American prohibition where drinking went underground.

I can imagine, in the not too distant future, a countrywide surge of smoking and drinking dens being set up by unscrupulous operators who will reap the monetary benefit.

Meanwhile, Gordon Brown will be weeping in to his overpriced legal beer.

The whole thinking behind criminalising smoking and making alcoholic drinks too expensive for the working class is ludicrous.

You know, Gordon, "even a worm will turn!"
