SIR - There is something Kevin Morris and I agree about. I fully endorse his tribute and best wishes to Councillor King (T & A, March 31). If other councillors had shown the same wisdom on transport we would now have much less congestion and pollution.

Unfortunately, Coun King did not prevail and we are now facing gridlock, expensive oil, high levels of air pollution and ill health through a car-based sedentary lifestyle.

I am not too young to remember Bradford City Transport, West Yorkshire Road Car, Hebble etc. Yes, we had good bus services then.

However, this was much easier to provide when few had cars. Now that people have travel choices, buses must win customers from their cars. Only market-focused companies are likely to achieve this.

Nevertheless, unless the Council manage our roads better by charging the real costs of parking, we will have growing congestion, making travel an increasing misery whether by car or bus.

While people have the right to use their cars, they also have a responsibility to drive safely and pay the full costs of parking and road space.

Were these factors to apply, bus use would rise as its advantages would be fully apparent.
