News that plans to build a state-of-the-art business park on the site of the former West Bowling Golf Club have been approved by the Council's area planning panel, taking this important scheme a big step nearer to becoming reality, is bound to be widely welcomed in Bradford. After all, it promises to create up to 3,500 jobs, 2,500 of them at Marks & Spencer's new distribution centre alone. It is undoubtedly a good thing.

However, American developers ProLogis should not be disheartened if they encounter some scepticism among the Bradford public. A widespread reluctance to rejoice until the cranes are in place goes back many years to the much-vaunted Odsal Superdome project, which raised such high hopes but has yet to be delivered.

Then there was the Rawson Market debacle, which saw the market hall demolished years before funds were in place to build a promised replacement thanks to a long delay in selling-off the Vicar Lane car park - which eventually became the Leisure Exchange. Add to that the long wait for the Broadway development to begin and it is understandable that a familiar Bradford reaction to news of any plan is: "I'll believe it when I see it."

In fact, the ProLogis scheme is another major landmark in Bradford's rosy future. Added to other projects already on paper, there is a huge amount to look forward to.

Bradford now knows where it's going and is eager to set off. We look forward to these various schemes moving on to the delivery phase, sooner rather than later, so the journey can begin.
