SIR - I wish Keith Thomson (T&A, January 4) would read my contributions carefully before offering his explanations.

In my last letter, I suggested scientific experts could, surely, find alternatives to oil and gas and until then the only sensible thing to do was to provide further nuclear power.

Keith Thomson admits, as I pointed out, that wind turbines and other renewable sources are expensively inefficient and can provide nowhere near what we need.

E-on are to build a new coal-fired station, which will halve CO2 emissions and are planning to store a large amount of same.

The Greens are opposing their plans, saying they will jeopardise the EU's targets. How? In any event the EU is well able to scupper any plans it might have without any help from other quarters.

In conclusion, his explanations were of no use to me, thanks all the same.
