SIR - I suspect the general public would feel better if Mr Sutcliffe (Bradford South MP) looks a bit closer to home before he denigrates footballers' current salary levels.

The wages of Drogba, Terry and Lampard reflect the worldwide market rate for their individual talents and are paid by a private company not by UK taxpayers.

Contrast this with the recently reported £87m expense accounts payments to MPs, add in their not insignificant salaries and then finally their "gold standard" pension arrangements all paid for by me and you.

Does Mr Sutcliffe not think these are obscene?

What's worse is the fact that MPs can set their own pay levels and are about to start negotiations for a basic salary of £100k, despite recently reducing their hours!

Is this all a bit of a smokescreen to deflect attention away from the ever-increasing costs of running Westminster and the amounts paid to individual MPs in particular?

Perhaps a salary and expenses cap for Westminster ought to be considered here as well.
