SIR - I can`t imagine anything that could convince me more that politicians find it difficult to speak without lying, than the ever increasing use of the phrase ''we are carrying out the will of the people'' and ''we are staying true to the promises that we made in our manifesto''.

This is especially true of the current Tory government who have hijacked these phrases as justification for following their dogmatic lurch towards a disastrous exit from the EU.

It`s obvious to even the most politically gullible that these people couldn`t give a jot about the will of the people and as for manifesto promises. Don`t make me laugh Mrs M!
