SIR - Sally Clifford reports on war re enactment show Yorkshire Wartime Experience and the various tanks on show. Her interviewees said of their WW1 replica “He is this wonder weapon and people want to see him...they break out in smiles.”
Despite them stressing the sacrifices made by combatants, this is dangerously close to making war seem like a game.
In reality tank crews suffered amongst the highest fatalities and serious injuries of any service. A realistic ‘experience’ would include twisted metal, burning flesh and screaming young men.
If people enjoy these machines fair enough, they are impressive, but let’s not pretend this is a wartime experience in any way. That would not honour the men who saved us.
