SIR - What an inept thing for Blair to do before he leaves office, recommending Salman Rushdie, for an honour in the Queen's birthday honours list.

It was bound to cause a furore and I do not understand why the honour was conferred.

But this is no reason for Iran and Pakistan to start telling us who must and must not be honoured. It is no business of theirs.

And to burn the Union flag and effigies of the Queen is outrageous.

Just imagine if we returned the compliment each time a Muslim is found guilty of an act of terrorism, which is far, far worse.
