SIR - The proposal to add folic acid to all our bread, in order to aid a small number of pregnant women, has echoes of the suggested addition of fluoride to tap-water supplies.

To avoid any further unnecessary mass medication, and taking due account of Britain's leading position in the league of teenage pregnancy, perhaps more success would be achieved by simply adding a shot of neat folic acid to every bottle of Malibu and Bacardi Breezer, thus offering a rare opportunity of matching cause and effect ?
