SIR – Most of our media is anti-Labour, going back well before the 1924 Zinoviev letter in the Daily Mail, playing every dirty trick in the book to keep Labour out of power. An example being the lies pushed out by the ConDems since 2010: “The financial mess that Labour caused” (A Waterhouse, T&A, May 13, 2015). It is a surprise we ever had a Labour government, even accepting those of the “closet Tory”, Blair.

As a nation we tend to be critical of all things leftwing, but seem tolerant of mistakes made by right wing politicians, an example being the disaster of Tory energy policy in the 1980s.

Up to the Thatcher era Britain had a fair degree of control over its energy, much of it belonging to us, the people, through state ownership.

Our natural gas, if used, mainly in the domestic sector, secure throughout the 21st Century, most electricity generated by coal (estimated reserves, over 200 years), with back-up by nuclear and renewable.

Then came “The Big Sell-off”, not least getting rid of “Demon Coal”, despite the introduction of “Clean Burn” technology, this tragedy occurred with the blessing of well meaning “anoraks” and misguided so called “conservationists”. Much of our energy needs, including coal, are now imported!
