SIR – AFTER 1945 Labour introduced measures designed to improve the quality of life for all. Over the years these reforms have been diluted by Exchequers of all parties to save money. Since 2010 Britain’s welfare services have been more or less destroyed. Since the ConDems took charge our country has become more fragmented.

We can reverse the trend by electing a genuine Left of Centre government. An administration supporting a mixed economy, where the NHS, education and welfare are fully protected, where our railways, waterways, Royal Mail and BT along with gas, electricity and water are brought back into public ownership.

Should no party gain an overall majority and if Ed Miliband refrains from making arrogant statements that he refuses to include Nicola Sturgeon’s party in coalition, then Labour could lead a government of the broad Left. The SNP and those of similar persuasion in Northern Ireland, Wales and England would be represented in Cabinet with a guarantee the four nations making up the UK would be granted equal status.

The main condition for including the Nationalists at the centre of power would be that they abandon all thoughts of full independence and help secure the future of a truly British United Kingdom.
