SIR – Tuesday’s T&A plea for better driving standards is very apt, because as well as the huge personal tragedy we are all significantly worse off because of the costs of crashes.

Unfortunately, the legal system sends out the message that bad driving is OK – if you kill someone by careless driving you will get a light suspended sentence, as your front page article showed.

Politicians and the legal system do not take road safety seriously and as long as that is the case families will continue to lose loved ones and face longer than necessary queues at A&E.

Bus drivers are about ten times safer than other drivers because they get about six weeks extra quality training and have on-vehicle monitoring of their driving quality.

It would be relatively cheap and easy to apply this to all drivers.
