SIR - Further to A Waterhouse’s letter (February 26) I too am dismayed by the appalling driving standards in the area. I drive in a professional capacity which involves me driving up and down Leeds Road several times a day.

I observe driving practice that borders on insanity. One in three people are using a phone at the wheel up and down that road, virtually no one wears a seat belt and the standards of driving fall far short of what I would consider safe.

My biggest concern is the lack of police to deal with all these people driving illegally. I very rarely see the police on this road and witnessed a police car watch someone drive through a red lighta few days ago and did absolutely nothing. It’s no surprise that there are fatalities on a regular basis as the lack of policing has given rise to drivers thinking this is acceptable.

Even in a professional capacity driving on this road frightens me silly. I too remember David Ward’s promise to deal with this. If anything the situation is getting worse by the week.
