SIR - Even though recognising the outstanding contribution to humanity made by those of the Jewish faith, and still cherishing the friendships formed through the integrity of my Jewish contacts, I still remember Irgun Zvai Leumi, the Deir Yassin Massacre and the carnage inflicted by the bombing of the King David Hotel.

Therefore, the Jews who are fearful of remaining in this country (T&A, January 19) should realise that Muslims do not hold the monopoly on lunatic fringe terrorism, and capitulation to violence will serve to exacerbate problems.

That all parties should actively condemn violence and seek a compromise on human and territorial rights based on fairness and not power must be the way forward.

Surely that is the purpose of the United Nations, who must be given the power to devise and fulfil an equitable solution.

Perhaps your conflicting correspondents could seek a similar compromise by building upon that with which they mutually agree.
