THE long-term proposals to develop the World Heritage Site in Saltaire are eagerly awaited and, on the face of it, seem to represent a reasonable strategy to take the village forward over the next 30 years.

However, there has to be a certain amount of caution about ensuring the unique character of this vital asset to Bradford tourism is maintained.

Ideas like a community arts hub, a museum and a digital visitor trail are certainly ones that seem to be in keeping with the identity of Saltaire, and that is key to preserving it as one of the jewels in the district’s crown.

It is, as much as anything, the character of the village, not just the physical buildings, that make it such a special place, and any proposals to develop it must bear that in mind. No one wants to see it completely preserved in aspic, and there are certainly changes that can improve the village.

But Bradford Council, which is drawing up the management plan for the village, needs to be sensitive to the very unique charm that makes it so special place.

It would seem from the initial proposals the Council is taking this responsibility seriously and thinking very carefully about what is right for the heritage of the village.

And any such plan will also have to be approved by Unesco, which will serve as a further check and balance.

Let us now hope these proposals can be implemented in a careful and sensitive way to preserve the character for the locals while improving the visitor experience for the tourists many of its businesses rely on.
